Project Title:"Communicating Economic Knowledge to the Public, USA and UK in the 1970s."
Project Abstract: Historians of 20th century economics have focused primarily on economists’ participation in government and how the demands of policy making interacted with academic research. In comparison, the traffic between economics and the media has been largely neglected.
This research project traces the emergence of contemporary patterns of economists’ engagement with the public to the 1970s. In the course of this decade, economics’ public intellectuals gained unprecedented access to the mass media, and rehearsed new ways of communicating economic knowledge to the public. As a result of this engagement with the media, a consensus was forged by the early 1980s between the economics profession, the polity and the public.
Drawing methodologically from the "public understanding of science" literature and through a series of representative case studies, I outline a historical study of the forms of representing economic knowledge in the USA and UK mass media during the 1970s.
